Gulfstream Expanding Maintenance & Service Space At Savannah Airport

Citing a growing need for maintenance and service for its customer fleet, Gulfstream Aerospace announced recently that it will build a new service center at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The company expects the facility to open in mid-2019. Construction of the service center will entail a roughly $55 million investment from Gulfstream, the General Dynamics-owned designer and manufacturer of business jets, including the upcoming Gulfstream G500 and G600. Gulfstream expects the service center to create 200 jobs.

On The East Side

Announcing the expansion at the Savannah Technical College’s Aviation Training Center, Gulfstream says it will construct the 202,000-square-foot (18,766-square-meter) maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility it’s dubbing the Savannah Service Center East on the airport’s east side. In addition to hangar space, the center will contain offices and back shops.

Savannah Service Center East will complement the company’s existing Savannah Service Center, billed as the world’s largest purpose-built business jet maintenance facility, and give Gulfstream more than 1 million square feet (92,903 square meters) in Savannah dedicated to hangar space, offices, and back shops focused on customer support. In addition to aircraft-on-ground resources, Gulfstream says the center will provide hourly and calendar-driven airframe inspections, avionics installations, and interior refurbishments.

Mark Burns, Gulfstream Aerospace president, says the new service center comes on the heels of a recent Gulfstream announcement concerning meeting customer needs with facilities in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Van Nuys, California. “These new facilities will keep us well-positioned for support, maintenance, and refurbishment of the Gulfstream fleet, which is now at nearly 2,700 aircraft and continues to grow,” he says. Gulfstream currently has service centers in Georgia, California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Nevada, Massachusetts, China, Brazil, and England.

An Educated Move

Burns says students at Savannah Technical College’s Aviation Training Center will play an integral role in the company’s future growth and that Gulfstream’s expansion in Savannah directly relates to its strong partnership with the college. “The school’s aviation programs, which have provided us with more than 500 knowledgeable and skilled employees over nearly 20 years and continue to grow, will help us meet the workforce needs this expansion creates,” he says.

The college’s aviation technology division, which the U.S Federal Aviation Administration certifies, offers associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs in aircraft structural technology and aviation maintenance, including airframe and power plant. Located near Gulfstream’s Savannah operations, the college’s Aviation Training Center includes a 5,000-square-foot (465-square-meter) hangar and a Gulfstream G100 business jet students have used since 2014.
