Boeing Unveils Wide-Body BBJ 777 Models, Billed As Longest-Range Business Jets Ever

Featuring GE GE9X engines and offering the ability to “connect virtually any two cities in the world,” Boeing Business Jets recently launched the new BBJ 777-8 and 777-9 aircraft, which are billed as being able to “fly more than half way around the word without stopping.” (Photo courtesy of Boeing.)

With the promise that it can “connect virtually any two cities in the world,” Boeing Business Jets’ wide-body, twin-engine BJJ 777X got its official launch in mid-December at the MEBAA (Middle East Business Aviation Association) Show 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Available in BBJ 777-8 and BJJ 777-9 models, Boeing say the business jetliners can “fly more than half way around the world without stopping, farther than any business jet ever built.” Also at MEBAA, Boeing announced it has taken another order for its BBJ MAX family of business jets from an unidentified customer. That brings total orders for the BBJ MAX family to 21.

    Space & Distance

Both the BBJ 777-8 and BBJ 777-9 emphasize interior space and comfort-minded features. While the BJJ 777-8 offers a longer range of 11,645 nautical miles (21,570 kilometers) with 75 passengers than the BJJ 777-9’s 11,000 nautical miles (20,370 kilometers) with 75 passengers, the BJJ 777-9’s cabin is larger—3,689 square feet (342.7 square meters) compared to the BJJ 777-8’s 3,256 square feet (302.5 square meters).

Noting that BBJ’s “most exclusive customers want to travel with the best space and comfort” while flying directly to their destination, Greg Laxton, BJJ head, says the 777X models can “do this like no other airplane before it, redefining ultra-long range VIP travel.” Overall, Boeing bills both jets’ cabins as the widest of “any twin-engine aircraft.”

Launched in 2013, both aircraft use GE GE9X engines, which, in addition to offering 5% lower specific fuel consumption compared to competing engines, produce 29% lower emissions than CAEP/8 (Committee On Aviation Environmental Protection) requirements and operate 15dB below Stage 4 noise levels. Both aircraft also sport fourth-generation composite wings with folding wingtips.

    Interior Choices

To demonstrate how adaptable the BJJ 777-8’s and 777-9’s interior cabins are for owners and operators, Boeing unveiled Home, Business, Dining, and Privacy interior concepts for the aircraft from leading design firms Greenpoint Technologies, Jet Aviation, and Unique Aircraft Design. Boeing says “each concept” demonstrates how the BBJ 777X “can be transformed to suit the tastes of any VIP customer.”
