Cirrus Aircraft’s Vision Jet’s Safe Return System Featuring Garmin Autoland Technology Receives FAA Certification

Cirrus Aircraft announced this week that its Vision Jet Safe Return system, which is powered by Garmin’s Autoland technology, has received Federal Aviation Administration certification, making it the first jet aircraft with Autoland to do so. With a push of an overhead button, Vision Jet passengers can activate Safe Return to take over flight control and autonomously fly to the nearest appropriate airport and land safely. The Vision Jet’s Garmin-powered Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck provides the necessary Autoland technology. Billed as the “world’s first single-engine Personal Jet,” the Vision Jet received FAA certification in 2016, and Cirrus introduced an enhanced G2 Vision Jet model last year.

    Safe Landings

Piper Aircraft’s single-engine M600 SLS turboprop became the world’s first Autoland-equipped aircraft to receive FAA certification when its HALO safety system featuring Autoland received type certification in May. Along with autonomous flight, Cirrus’ Safe Return system also communicates with air traffic control, lands the plane, brings it to a complete stop, allowing passengers to exit. The system uses all available aircraft data to form a flight plan, avoid terrain and weather dangers, initiate an approach, and land the plane while providing passengers visual and audio updates along the way.

Cirrus Aircraft CEO Zean Nielsen says Safe Return will make personal aviation more accessible, elevate the passenger experience, and take the next step toward autonomous flight. “The Vision Jet sets a new standard in personal travel with the combination of Safe Return and CAPS, offering the ultimate level of safety, control, and comfort for the pilot and passengers,” he says. CAPS is short for Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, billed as the first FAA-certified whole-airframe parachute safety system included as standard equipment on an aircraft.
