New Caledonia Passenger Carrier Aircalin Adds First Airbus 320neo To Fleet

Aircalin recently added a new Airbus A320neo jet configured in a 168-seat single-class layout to its fleet. The aircraft joins two new Airbus A330neo jets already in the New Caledonia-based passenger carrier’s fleet. (Photo courtesy of Airbus.)

Aircalin, a New Caledonia-based international passenger carrier, took delivery in late December of its first Airbus A320neo (new engine option) aircraft. The delivery is part of a company modernization effort, and joins two A330neo jets that have already been delivered. The A320neo will enable Aircalin to increase its flight capacity and launch new routes covering the Pacific region. Due to sharing 95% airframe commonality with the Airbus A320ceo (current engine option) variant, Airbus says the A320neo can seamlessly fit into existing A320 family fleets.

    Less Noise, Less Fuel Burned

Founded in 1983, Aircalin supports more than 20 international flights to 11 destinations with its Airbus fleet. The new A320neo is configured in a 168-seat single-class layout. It employs twin Pratt & Whitney PW1000 engines that help support a 3,400-nautical-mile (6,300-kilometer) range. The A320neo is also available with CFM International LEAP-1A engines. Both configurations leverage Sharklet wingtip devices designed to save fuel.

Airbus has received 7,455 firm orders from more than 120 customers worldwide for A320 Family aircraft, it says. Although the A320neo seats 150 to 180 passengers in a typical two-class seating layout, it can support 194 maximum in a high-density configuration. Airbus says the A320neo offers the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky at 12.1 feet (3.7 meters) and provides a roughly 50% reduction in noise footprint compared to previous-generation aircraft and 20% savings in fuel burn per seat.
