Read More (About Hangars)Owning an aircraft today—whether a light sport plane or multi-million-dollar executive jet—is a significant investment that extends on well after the initial purchase. It’s vital, then, to safeguard your airplane or helicopter with appropriate protection and security against all types of elements and potential damage. This is where hangars come in. Just like aircraft, though, not all hangars are alike.
On Controller.com, you’ll find various custom-built designs available, as well as options for various hangar door types. Some of these include hydraulic, designer, glass, industrial, moving wall, and bi-fold styles. Whether you’re looking for a permanent or temporary shelter to house a vintage military aircraft, floatplane, ag aircraft, or other aircraft, there’s a hangar option out there to match the wingspan, height, and length requirements.
Aircraft hangars have been in use nearly as long as aircraft, although not exactly in the form people now think of them. One early example, for example, dates to 1909 when Louis Bleriot, a French aviator attempting to cross the English Channel in a monoplane crashed into a French field. Bleriot ended up rolling the plane into a REIDsteel-manufactured steel cattle pen that a nearby farmer owned. Bleriot was reportedly impressed enough with the protective structure that he eventually ordered three for his company. REIDsteel continues to make hangars, and claims to have “probably built more full-size airplane hangars” than any other builder.
Along with hangars made of durable, long-lasting metal, wood, and concrete materials, you can also find portable fabric hangars designed for temporary aircraft storage and other applications, including storing and protecting other vehicle and machine types. Among the most common types of hangar designs are T-shaped and rectangular-shaped hangars that can store one or more aircraft.
Although all hangars aim to provide security and protection against wind, ice, snow, sunlight exposure, and other conditions, included storage, maintenance, repair, and other areas can lead to drastically different height and length dimensions and access points and add-ons included. Along with hangars that provide front and rear access, for example, you’ll find options for doors that use hydraulic cable and strap systems and sliding, single-panel, bi-fold, vertical, horizontal, floating, and other door styles.
For owners with specific needs, custom-built hangars are an option. On Controller.com, you’ll see custom-built assets featuring office space, conference rooms, lounge areas, bathrooms, workshops, and even kitchens. Other options can include fuel storage, loading docks, and secured gate entry. Depending on the hangar, some custom-built options are located on or very close to airports and offer direct taxi access.
