Hangar History

Aircraft hangars have been in use nearly as long as aircraft, although not exactly in the form people now think of them. One early example, for example, dates to 1909 when Louis Bleriot, a French aviator attempting to cross the English Channel in a monoplane crashed into a French field. Bleriot ended up rolling the plane into a REIDsteel-manufactured steel cattle pen that a nearby farmer owned. Bleriot was reportedly impressed enough with the protective structure that he eventually ordered three for his company. REIDsteel continues to make hangars, and claims to have “probably built more full-size airplane hangars” than any other builder.

Hangar Types & Options
