Jim Richmond was a big fan of the Piper Super Cub plane, which dates back to 1949 and was popularly used for bush flying, banner flying, and other applications. In 1980, Richmond decided to sell his home insulation business and establish CubCrafters as a company dedicated to rebuilding Super Cub aircraft. Over the next few years, CubCrafters transitioned from rebuilding Super Cubs, to innovating on the original designs, and finally to building full-fledged new aircraft.

Today, CubCrafters focuses on four main product lines, including the Carbon Cub SS, Carbon Cub FX, X Cub, and Top Cub. Some of them are built to be lightweight and powerful for quicker flights, while others are built for longer missions even in unforgiving environments.
