About Diamond Aircraft
Founded in 1981 in Austria by Wolf Hoffmann as Hoffmann Flugzeugbau, Diamond Aircraft Industries went through several ownership and name changes in the following years before Christian Dries purchased the company in the early 1990s. The company was then acquired by the Chinese company Wanfeng Aviation in 2017 and remains based in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, with facilities in Canada and China. Diamond Aircraft claims to be the first manufacturer to manufacture diesel-powered single- and twin-engine piston aircraft, as well as the first to install GARMIN’s G1000 avionics system in its aircraft, among other innovations, and is now the third-largest general aviation aircraft manufacturer.

General-Aviation Aircraft
The company’s first aircraft, and first success, was the HK36 Dimona motor glider. Later successes include the DA20, developed for North America, which received Flight International magazine’s Eagle Award for best light aircraft in 1995. The DA62, introduced in 2016, has been called a “flying luxury SUV” and remains a popular model. It is powered by 180-horsepower Austro AE330 jet fuel piston engines and carries up to seven passengers.
Other aircraft in the company’s current lineup include the sporty two-seat DA20-C1, the five-seat DA50 RG, the four-seat DA40, the multi engine piston DA42-VI, and special-mission aircraft such as the DA62 MPP and the upcoming DART series. The company also manufactures a line of flight simulators.
Special-Mission Aircraft
Diamond’s line of special-mission aircraft, including the DA42 MPP, the DA62 MPP, and the DART series, are designed for surveillance with features such as all-weather capability, low fuel consumption, surround view with bird-strike-proof canopies, and robust landing gear for unpaved surfaces.
