Fairchild Aviation’s contributions to the aviation sector include producing models for the Merlin and Metro business aircraft lines. Those lines originated from the designs of Ed Swearingen, who founded Swearingen Aircraft in 1959 and also designed the SJ30 light jet. Roughly 1,055 Merlin and Metro units were produced before production ended in 1998. Pre-owned models available include the Merlin IIIC, IIIB, IIIA, III, IIB, and IVC and Metro III, IIA, and 23. The 19-seat, twin turboprop Metro model evolved from the Merlin.

Using modifications applied to other aircraft designs as a basis, Swearingen came up with the SA26 Merlin, which gave way to the twin-turbine SA26-T Merlin IIA, SA26-AT Merlin IIB, SA226-T Merlin III, and Metro series. The Metro entered production in the early 1970s after Fairchild purchased a 90% stake in Swearingen, a move that resulted in Swearingen Aircraft becoming Swearingen Aviation Corporation.

Sherman Fairchild founded Fairchild Aviation Corporation in 1924 in New York. The company would produce numerous military aircraft; acquire such companies as Hiller Aircraft and Republic Aviation Company; and after taking over the civil aircraft assets of Dornier in 1996, produce the Fairchild Dorner 328 Jet under a new company named Fairchild Dornier. Eventually, the majority of Fairchild’s assets were acquired by M7 Aerospace in the early 2000s, which Elbit Systems of America purchased in 2010.
