The actual formation of Glasair Aviation is an interesting story with quite a few acquisitions, but it ultimately all goes back to Tom Hamilton flight testing a Glasair TD aircraft in 1979 and establishing Stoddard-Hamilton Aircraft. That company went bankrupt in the early 2000s, which led to Thomas W. Wathen purchasing all Glasair assets in 2001 and then buying the rights to the GlaStar model of plane from Arlington Aircraft Development, Inc. as well as its assets. Both the New Glasair, LLC and New GlaStar, LLC companies fall under the larger Glasair Aviation umbrella. The company was then sold to the China-based Jilin Hanxing Group in 2012 with the goal of building flight school trainers and personal aircraft for customers in the Chinese marketplace.

Some important models of aircraft to come from Glasair over the years are the Glasair I, II, and III, the GlaStar, the Sportsman 2+2, and the Glasair Merlin LSA (though only one has been built since 2015). Other than the GlaStar and Glasair Merlin LSA, you’ll often find versions of every other model for sale on Controller.com.
