Read More (About The Gulfstream G550)Gulfstream Aerospace’s large-cabin, ultra-long-range G550 business jet entered service in 2003 and served as Gulfstream’s flagship model until the Gulfstream G650 (which Gulfstream touted as the “world’s fastest business jet”) entered service in 2012. A winner of the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy, the G550 and its development are tied to Gulfstream’s ultra-long-range Gulfstream IV, which began deliveries in 1995.
Noted for the value it offers when compared with business jet in its class, the G550 has a 99.9% dispatch reliability rating with the National Business Aviation Association based on the 1 million-plus hours logged by the more than 560 G550s now in global service, according to its Savanah, Georgia-based manufacturer. In addition to business aviation duties, the G550 is often converted to carry out medevac and special-missions roles.
Able to transport up to 19 passengers and sleep as many as eight, the G550 can take off from and land at short-field, high-altitude airports. The aircraft offers 5,910-foot (1,801-meter) and 2,770-foot (844-meter) takeoff and landing distances, respectively, and has a maximum cruise altitude of 51,000 feet (15,545 meters) and maximum takeoff weight of 91,000 pounds (41,277 kilograms).
The airplane’s maximum flight range is 6,750 nautical miles (12,501 kilometers) when carrying eight passengers at Mach 0.80. Two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, which Gulfstream says provide the “most thrust of any jet in its class,” power the G550 and provide a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.885. The G550’s flight range supports nonstop flights from Shanghai to Los Angeles or New York to Dubai at Mach 0.80 or from London to Tokyo or London to Los Angeles nonstop at Mach 0.85.
With a cabin interior measuring 43.9 feet (13.4 meters) long and 6 feet (1.83 meters) high, the G550 is equipped with 14 Gulfstream signature oval windows that infuse the cabin with natural light. G550 owners have an option to configure the interior with four distinct living areas, including a dedicated crew rest area, private stateroom, conference area, and entertainment area. Gulfstream says the G550 is the only aircraft in its class that lets owners choose between locating the full-size galley forward or aft. The G550 also includes Gulfstream’s PlaneView avionics, which integrates a HUD, EVS (Enhanced Vision System), and optional Synthetic Vision-Primary Flight Display.
