After entering the aviation sector in the early 1900s as a teenager, B.D. Maule designed his first aircraft, called the M-1, before taking a job with Lycoming in the late 1930s. In 1939, Maule designed a low-cost mechanical starter for light aircraft called the Hummer. He formed the Mechanical Products Company in 1940 to manufacture the Hummer.

In 1941, Maule formed the B.D. Maule Company in Michigan to build a tailwheel for light aircraft that Maule had designed, and in the early 1950s, Maule began designing a STOL (short takeoff and landing), high-wing monoplane taildragger called the Jetasen M-4. The first production models were delivered in 1962. 1968, Maule moved his company to Moultrie, Georgia, to Spence Air Base where it’s located. The company delivered roughly 2,500 aircraft over the decades.

Maule currently manufactures and sells variants of its 180 HP MX-7 Series, 235 HP/260 HP M-7 Series, and 235 HP M-9 series of aircraft. The MX-7 Series models, which included the MX-7-180B, MX-7-180C, and MX-7-180, provide four seats in two-row, side-by-side seating, while the M-7 Series (M-7-235B, MT-7-235, M-7-260, and MT-7-260) and M-9 Series (M-9-235 fuel injected, M-9-235 carbureted, and M-9-260 fuel injected) models provide an optional fifth seat. Pre-owned Maule models include the MX-7-160, MX-7-180A, M-7-420, M-7-420AC, M-7-260C, M-7-235C, and M-4-180V.
