McDonnell Douglas was a leading global manufacturer of military and commercial aircraft and helicopters, as well a top global defense contractor. The company was created in 1967 following the merger of McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft Company. Separately, the companies produced numerous well-known aircraft, including the DC-10 airliner, F-15 Eagle, and AH-64 Apache helicopter. The latter was developed by Hughes Helicopters, which McDonnell Douglas acquired in 1984 and made a subsidiary named McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems.

McDonnell Douglas itself merged with Boeing in 1997 as part of a multi-billion dollar deal between the companies. Previously, Donald Davis formed David Douglas Co. in 1920 with David Davis before forming Douglas Aircraft in 1928. James McDonnell incorporated McDonnell Aircraft Corp. in 1939 in St. Louis, where McDonnell Davis was located following the companies’ merger.

McDonnell Douglas produced the MD-11, which expanded on the DC-10 and made it first flight in 1990. The company also manufactured the MD 901, 902, and 902 Explorer helicopters; MD500 series of helicopters; MD 600 and MD 600N helicopters; TA4J Skyhawk; and variants of the DC-9 and DC-8. McDonnell Douglas also played a major role in constructing Skylab, the United States’ first space station, which orbited Earth from 1973 to 1979.
