    About Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi’s involvement in the aerospace sector dates to 1870, when Yataro Iwasaki created a company that would eventually become Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1934. Over the years, various Mitsubishi subsidiaries have developed and manufactured piston, turboprop, and jet aircraft for general, military, and commercial use.

Significant Milestones In Mitsubishi Aircraft History

Mitsubishi’s roots in aviation stretch back to pre-World War II and extend through the time of this writing. Some noteworthy achievements include:

1928 - Mitsubishi Aircraft Company was established. The company developed and produced Japanese military aircraft like the A5M mono-wing fighter and the A6M Zero fighter used heavily in World War II.

1934 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was formed. The company was split into three companies in 1950, reconsolidated in 1964, and is a member of the Mitsubishi Group.

1956 - MHI began design work on MU 2, the first plane the company would manufacture since WWII. MU-2 was produced in civil aviation and military variants, and its early models used engines from Turbomeca Astazou. Later versions were equipped with Garrett TPE331 engines. The light, twin-engine turboprop, which would spawn numerous variants like the Marquise and Solitaire, made its first flight in 1963. The Mitsubishi MU-2 remained in production at factories in Japan and San Angelo, Texas, until 1986.

2008 - MHI launched Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. Created to develop and produce the Mitsubishi Regional Jet, later renamed the “SpaceJet,” the subsidiary was suspended in 2020 after a series of setbacks and shut down in February 2023.

2020 - MHI acquired the Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) Series program. As of this writing, the MHI RJ Aviation Group subsidiary oversees the regional jets’ maintenance, refurbishment, marketing, sales, and other activities.

    Top Mitsubishi Aircraft Models

With a long history in both military and civil aircraft, Mitsubishi has manufactured several models that every aviation aficionado should know. Controller.com put the list together:

    1. Mitsubishi A6M Zero - Now retired, this fighter plane was one of Japan’s most produced WWII combat aircraft and is renowned for its long range and maneuverability. Variants include the A6M2 “Type 21” with foldable wingtips for carriers and a floatplane A6M2-N.
    2. Mitsubishi MU-2 - Still in service, this turboprop is one of the company’s most well-known and successful postwar aircraft. Its two famous variations, Marquise and Solitaire, have Honeywell TPE331 engines and operate at altitudes up to 31,000 feet (9,449 meters). The Marquise, however, has an extended fuselage design, allowing for more passenger space.
    3. Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” - This twin-engine medium bomber was heavily used during WWII and is currently retired. It was found especially vulnerable to fire because of its design with unarmored fuel tanks.
    4. Mitsubishi CRJ Series - Although not originally designed by Mitsubishi, this regional jet has seats for between 50 and 104 passengers, depending on the configuration.
