Frank Robinson founded the company in 1973 after roles at Cessna, Bell Helicopter, and Hughes Helicopter. Based at Zamperini Field in Torrance, California, Robinson has produced over 13,000 aircraft since delivering its first aircraft in 1979, a 2-seat, piston-powered R22. The R22 went on to become one of the world’s top-selling civil helicopters.

In 1992, Robinson introduced the piston-powered four-seat R44, followed by its first turbine model, the R66, in 2010. In March 2025, Robinson announced its first all-new aircraft in nearly 15 years, the turbine-powered R88.

Robinson manufactures, assembles, inspects, and flight tests its helicopters at its Torrance facility. It offers a factory overhaul program for older aircraft and supports a worldwide network of more than 400 service centers and dealers.

Robinson R22

The R44 series includes 4-seat Raven I and Raven II configurations, both featuring Robinson’s patented Cyclic design, which the company says reduces pilot effort and simplifies operation. The Raven I has a range of about 300 nm (556 km), while the Raven II can travel about 350 nm (648 km).

The 2-seat R44 Cadet offers a larger training platform and more advanced avionics, according to Robinson. It utilizes the same airframe, rotor system, and engine as the R44 Raven I but has an aft compartment reconfigured to provide extra space for cargo.

Robinson R66

In March 2025, Robinson announced the refreshed next-generation R66 NxG, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the original R66’s release. Available in basic Southwood, mid-grade Palo Verde, and limited-edition Riviera trims, the R66 NxG features an all-glass cockpit, a 2- or 3-axis Garmin Autopilot system, updated interiors, new paint schemes, LED landing lights, and more.

The R66 Military Trainer has a Garmin all-glass cockpit with Garmin’s 3-axis autopilot system. The R66 NxG Police is a turnkey law enforcement configuration equipped with a Wescam MX-10 multi-sensor imaging system and an SX-7 Starsun searchlight. The Robinson R66 Turbine Marine designed for overwater missions, comes equipped with fixed utility or pop-out floats, offering added safety and versatility for coastal operations, island transport, and maritime patrol use.

Robinson R88

Robinson says the R88 is its largest and most capable aircraft ever. It has a 10-seat cabin for two pilots and eight passengers, a 350-nm flight range, a maximum 1,800-lb (816-kg) payload capacity with full fuel, and roughly 275 feet³ (7.8 meters³) of cabin volume. Anticipated uses include larger-scale utility and transport operations, as well as public safety and special missions.
