Bombardier recently wrapped up the steep-approach certification flight test campaign for its super-midsize Challenger 350 business jet at the London City Airport. The global designer and manufacturer of aircraft and trains expects the Challenger 350, which recently surpassed 200 deliveries, to receive final certification sometime yet this year. Once that occurs, all of Bombardier’s business jets spanning the super-midsize to ultra-long-range categories will be certified for steep-approach landings, the company states.

    A Best-Selling Top Performer

Montreal-based Bombardier cites the Challenger 300 Series (of which the Challenger 350 is a part) as the best-selling business aircraft over the last 10 years, reporting that it made 56 deliveries of the aircraft in 2017 alone. When the Challenger 350 receives its final steep-approach certification, existing owners of the aircraft will be able to implement the ability as a retrofit option at one of Bombardier’s service centers.

Bombardier also notes that upon certification operators will be able to perform landings under strict conditions, such as the London City Airport’s 5.5-degree approach angle and short runway. The company says this will give passengers “direct access to one of the world’s greatest financial centers.”

In a statement, Peter Likoray, Bombardier Business Aircraft senior vice president of sales and marketing, says the Challenger 350’s proven performance and the stellar in-flight experience it provides have already helped make the aircraft “the undeniable market leader” in its segment. The upcoming steep-approach certification will cement that position while offering “the most flexibility to our discerning clientele,” he says.

    Fast & Quiet

Introduced in 2014 and seating up to 10 passengers, Bombardier points out the Challenger 350’s short-field performance and its ability to climb quickly to a 43,000-foot (13,106-meter) initial cruising altitude as selling points. The company also touts the super-midsize aircraft’s ability to fly full range with full fuel at full passenger capacity; the Challenger 350 has a maximum 3,200-nautical mile (5,926-kilometer) range and Mach 0.83 top speed thanks to its twin Honeywell HTF7350 turbofans.

Elsewhere, the aircraft is equipped with Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 advanced avionics, featuring four displays and a dual flight-management system. The cabin spans 7.2 feet (2.19 meters) wide and features a sound-insulating entry door, forward and aft HD monitors, and mobile device control of the cabin environment and entertainment system. The aircraft also features what Bombardier claims is the fastest and most reliable air-to-ground internet coverage over North America among 4G-equipped business aircraft.
