École Nationale d’Aérotechnique (ÉNA) reached rarified air in late May when it became the first teaching institution in the world to add a Bombardier C Series plane to its fleet of teaching aircraft. Montreal-based Bombardier specifically donated a CS100 aircraft to ÉNA, also referred to as the National School of Aerotechnics. The school is located in the Saint-Hubert borough in the city of Longueuil in Quebec near Montreal and in close proximity to the Montreal Saint-Hubert Longueuil Airport. ÉNA is affiliated with cégep Édouard-Montpetit, Quebec’s largest college.

    Continued Support

Over the years, Bombardier has worked with various educational institutions focused on aerospace and engineering, partnering through internships, scholarships, corporate donations, and R&D projects. Last year, the train and plane manufacturer donated a Learjet 60 to ÉNA, as well as a CRJ100 to the British Columbia Institute of Technology. ÉNA offers four aeronautical technology programs, maintains five hangers, and teaches about 1,300 full-time students annually and several hundred part-time technicians participating in ongoing studies.

Bombardier built the donated CS100 in 2014. The plane was the third flight test vehicle in the C Series program and made its maiden flight in March 2014. With about 1,400 flight hours logged, the CS100 was used primarily for avionics, electrical, and community noise testing. Currently situated at Bombardier’s Flight Test Center in Wichita, Kansas, the CS100 will join ÉNA’s current fleet of 37 aircraft (26 airplanes and 11 helicopters), which includes two Bombardier Learjet and two Bombardier Challenger aircraft.

    High-Quality Training

Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare says Bombardier has assumed a leadership role in the Canadian and global aerospace industry, including “by being at the forefront of the development and utilization of disruptive technologies.” Bellemare says the company’s commitment to innovation and excellence is evident in its educational interests, noting Bombardier “encourages and supports our teaching institutions, such as ÉNA, in their mission to provide the highest-quality training that meets the needs of the industry.”

Robert Dewar, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft vice president, C Series Aircraft Program, says Bombardier is investing in the development of highly skilled workers for the “Montreal aerospace cluster” by bolstering the educational value of ÉNA’s technical training programs. Calling the C Series the “most innovative aircraft in its class,” Dewar says the donated CS100 will “contribute to the development of broader sets of skills by allowing students to manipulate the most advanced technology in commercial aircraft.”
