The On-the-Job Training (OJT) Laboratory that Gulfstream Aerospace uses to train technicians in various aircraft maintenance and service areas recently received a fuselage, main entry door, and wing from both the upcoming 19-passenger Gulfstream G600 and ultra-long-range Gulfstream G650 twin-engine business jet. The G600 is expected to receive type certification in 2019. The G650 entered service in 2012.

    Into The Lab

Created in 2016, the OJT Lab features 16,000 square feet (1,486 square meters) of space within Gulfstream’s Technical Training Center (TTC). The G600 and G650 parts will ensure Gulfstream technicians “continue to provide aircraft owners and operators with a first-rate service experience,” the company stated.

Gulfstream opened the TTC in 2015. It now includes 30,000 square feet (2,787 square meters) featuring 17 classrooms and labs focused on avionics, structures, and composites. The facility supports more than 20 instructors, 90-plus courses, and up to 300 employees.

    Gaining Experience

Besides the G600 and G650 parts, the lab houses a Gulfstream GV jet with functional landing gear. Gulfstream uses the aircraft to train new employees in such areas as panel removal, sheet metal work, leading edge removal/servicing, and proper maintenance documentation. Experienced technicians also use the lab for continuing education opportunities.

In a statement, Derek Zimmerman, president Gulfstream Customer Support, said more than 500 new technicians have passed through the lab. “The ability to get hands-on training for the newest and most popular aircraft in our fleet in a realistic yet controlled environment elevates our technicians’ understanding of our product line and ensures they continue to hone their skills and practice new techniques,” he said.

Gulfstream manufactures the G280, G550, G650, and G650ER business jets. The upcoming G500 is expected to receive its certification this year. You’ll find many pre-owned Gulfstream aircraft for sale on Controller.com.
