Gulfstream’s G600 Enters FAA Certification Field Performance Testing

Gulfstream’s upcoming twin-engine G600 business jet recently began its field performance testing on its way to receiving its FAA type certification, which Gulfstream expects to occur yet this year. The aircraft is scheduled for deliveries to customers sometime next year. (Photo courtesy of Gulfstream.)

Gulfstream’s ultra-long-range G600 twin-engine business jet has begun its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification field performance testing. Featuring a clean-sheet design, the G600 is expected to receive its type certification later this year and begin deliveries in 2019. The aircraft has already garnered design awards for its interior and has set numerous city-pair speed records.

    Highly Confident

Gulfstream is operating five flight-testing aircraft as part of the G600’s test program. Gulfstream CEO Mark Burns says the exceptional performance Gulfstream is seeing in testing leaves him “highly confident our clients will be impressed with the aircraft we deliver.” Burns adds, “Its high-speed range, superior comfort, and unmatched efficiency have already exceeded our expectations.”

Burns says the G500, which recently received its FAA type certification and will begin deliveries yet this year, inspired Gulfstream to “bring the G600 across the finish line and into the hands of our customers.” Gulfstream extended the range of both aircraft not long ago, bumping the G600’s to 6,500 nautical miles (12,038 kilometers) at Mach 0.85 and 5,100 nautical miles (9,445 kilometers) at Mach 0.90.

    Up To The Test

Sleeping up to nine and seating up to 19 passengers in four living areas, the G600 recently finished FAA certification for ice shapes and stall speeds testing. Powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW815GA engines, the G600 has flown more than 2,290 flight hours in 600-plus flights. First flying in December 2016, the aircraft operates at a maximum speed of Mach 0.925, offers a maximum cruising altitude of 51,000 feet (15,545 meters) and a maximum takeoff weight of 94,600 pounds (42,910 kilograms), and includes the Symmetry Flight Deck featuring the “industry’s first active control sidesticks.”
