Embraer Purchases Majority Interest In Brazilian Cybersecurity Company Tempest Security Intelligence
Brazilian-based Embraer, maker of commercial aircraft and Phenom, Legacy, Praetor, and Lineage executive jets, announced in early July it has inked a contract to make a capital investment in Tempest Security Intelligence that will give it a majority interest in Tempest. Founded in 2000, Tempest is Brazil’s largest cybersecurity company, and has offices in Recife and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as London; the firm serves 300 clients throughout South America, Latin America, and Europe.
$10 Billion In Annual Losses
Embraer has been indirectly involved with Tempest since 2016 by way of an Aerospace Investment Fund that it and several other entities created to strengthen the aerospace, aeronautical, defense, and security production chain. Embraer says its latest investment will help Tempest continue functioning as an autonomous company while enhancing its growth and expansion potential. Embraer notes that Brazil owns the second-highest rate of cybercrime worldwide next to Russia, which translates to upward of $10 billion in annual losses for Brazilian companies to financial theft and theft of intellectual property and confidential information.
“Embraer has always encouraged the development of a national chain for the aeronautical and defense industry in Brazil, and one of our priorities is to focus on the cybersecurity segment,” says Embraer Defense & Security President and CEO Jackson Schneider. Tempest CEO Cristiano Lincoln Mattos, meanwhile, notes that the cybersecurity market is booming worldwide, and Tempest will continue investing to evolve its portfolio, “aiming to always stay ahead of the growing digital threats that impact our customers, by being a reference in Brazil and operating internationally.”
