GE Aviation Introduces 360 Foam Wash System With Etihad Airways As Water Wash Alternative

    Posted On: February 10, 2021

GE Aviation recently introduced a new 360 Foam Wash engine-cleaning system with launch partner Etihad Airways for GE90 and GEnx engines designed to improve fuel economy, enhance performance, and improve on-wing engine time. (Photo courtesy of GE Aviation.)

GE Aviation recently unveiled 360 Foam Wash, a “groundbreaking jet engine cleaning system” in conjunction with launch partner Etihad Airways, global aviation provider and national airline of the United Arab Emirates. GE says the system will help remove more 7,716 tons (7,000 metric tons) of carbon dioxide this year from Etihad aircraft equipped with its GE90 and GEnx engines as compared to traditional water wash.

    Going Green

The system launch is part of Etihad’s Greenliner program, a “first-of-its-kind eco partnership” with GE Aviation, Boeing, and others. The program aims to innovate, develop, and test aviation decarbonization technologies using a specially themed Boeing 787 Dreamliner with GEnx engines. Technical licenses that GE Aviation awarded Etihad enables the airline to perform in-house foam washes of GE engine on its Boeing 777 and 787 jets. As an early development partner, Etihad is the first airline to trial the system on an on-wing GE90 engine, receive a GE90 Foam Wash license, and receive licenses for multiple GE engine programs (GE90 and GEnx).

The self-contained 360 Foam Wash system restores engine performance by injecting a proprietary solution that GE Aviation has formulated to remove dust and dirt. Results in Etihad’s trial testing included lower engine exhaust temperatures and enhanced engine compressor efficiency, both which led to fuel-consumption savings and longer on-wing engine time.

    Always Learning

GE Aviation Vice President and GM of After Market Strategic Solutions, Jean Lydon-Rodgers, says the system-based research is a “shining example” of how its Etihad partnership has helped it acquire knowledge. “We are learning more about how our engines operate and how they respond in hot and harsh environments than ever before, and our long-standing relationship with Etihad has been integral to that process,” Lydon-Rodgers says.
