Honda Aircraft introduced its HondaJet 2600 Concept light jet in 2021 and now says it will commercialize the aircraft. The company is working toward receiving type certification for the all-new aircraft in 2028. The jet will provide an experience more on par with a midsized jet, resulting in better performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency than typical light jets, Honda says. The 2600 will be the first light jet capable of crossing the United States nonstop, and Honda says it will also be the world’s longest-range single-pilot business aircraft.

“The commercialization of our new light jet represents Honda’s next chapter of skyward mobility, which further expands the potential of people’s lives,” says Honda Aircraft president and CEO Hideto Yamasaki. “By building on the expertise behind our technological innovations, we will accelerate the development of the program with sustainability a key element throughout.”

    A New Product Line

Honda introduced the HondaJet 2600 at the 2021 National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE). The aircraft represents a new product line for Honda and will be offered alongside the HondaJet Elite II very-light jet introduced in October 2022. Honda is still finalizing engineering designs for the HondaJet 2600, but fabrication activities are underway. The company has reached supplier agreements with Garmin for the aircraft’s avionics, Williams International for engines, and many more.

The jet’s typical configuration seats 10 passengers and one crew member. An alternative configuration is available for nine passengers and two crew members. In addition to a 120-cubic-foot (3.4-cubic-meter) cargo compartment that’s anywhere from 33 to 100% larger than those of the 2600’s competitors, the jet will have the category’s tallest cabin height (5.21 ft.; 1.59 m), lowest cabin altitude (6,363 ft; 1,939 m at a maximum cruise altitude of 47,000 ft; 14,326 m), and the lowest cabin noise level and vibration. Furthermore, during a typical mission, the HondaJet 2600 will provide up to 20% better fuel efficiency than light jet competitors and more than 40% better than midsize aircraft, Honda says.

    Engines & Capabilities

The HondaJet 2600 is powered by two Williams International FJ44-4C engines and equipped with avionics based on the Garmin 3000 suite. Pilot assistance technologies on board include Autothrottle, Autobrake, a runway overrun awareness and alerting system (ROASS), and an advanced steering augmentation system (ASAS) that enhances handling and safety.

Honda is targeting performance for a maximum flight range of 2,625 nautical miles (4,861 kilometers) with four passengers and one crew member and a maximum cruise speed of 450 KTAS. The jet has a takeoff distance of 3,300 ft (1,006 m) and a landing distance of 2,500 ft (762 m). Passengers will travel in a cabin measuring 25.38 ft long by 5.08 ft wide by 5.21 ft high (7.74 by 1.55 by 1.59 m).
