About The Cessna Citation 525

The Cessna brand is one of the most recognizable in the aviation sector; the Textron Aviation-owned manufacturer has sold thousands of Citation business jets, including the Citation Model 525 and its many variants. Those variants include the Citation Jet, Citation CJ1, CJ1+, CJ2, CJ2+, CJ3, CJ3+, and Citation CJ4. Cessna designed the Citation Model 525 in the late 1980s as a replacement for the original Citation that Cessna introduced in the late 1960s and later upgraded with the Citation I in the mid-1970s. Cessna introduced the six-seat Citation Jet, or CJ, in 1989 at the National Business Aviation Association convention. While the Citation Jet used a forward fuselage patterned after the original Citation’s, the Citation Jet also included new Williams International FJ44-1 turbofan engines, and incorporated the now-distinctive Cessna “T-tail.” The Citation Jet is further known as the first Cessna business jet to use true laminar-flow wings designed to reduce drag and increase speed.

The Variants

The Citation Jet took its maiden flight in 1991 and earned its FAA certification in 1992. Deliveries began in 1993, and Cessna reportedly manufactured about 360 models before upgrading to the CJ1. Released in 2000, the CJ1 was essentially an enhanced Citation Jet version that included an increased maximum takeoff weight and updated avionics suite. Like the Citation Jet, the CJ1 was also given the Model 525 designation, as was the CJ1+ that later replaced the CJ1. The CJ2 and CJ2+, meanwhile, were designated Model 525A, the CJ3 and CJ3+ was Model 525B, and the CJ4 was Model 525C. Textron Aviation still produces the CJ3+ and CJ4, and has reportedly produced more than 2,000 Model 525 variants overall since the original Citation Jet.

Single-Pilot Appeal

Appealing for its single-pilot operational abilities, the original Citation Jet is also said to have enticed buyers seeking an entry-level jet that was easy to operate, reliable, affordable, and a good short-field performer. The variants that followed the Citation Jet were essentially considered updates or stretched versions of their predecessors that introduced various enhancements. The CJ4, for example, is certified for single-pilot operation but uses two Williams International FJ44-4A engines, measures 53.4 feet (16.2 meters) long, offers a 2,165-nautical-mile (4,010-kilometer) range, seats up to 10, and uses Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics.
