The roots of Commander-branded aircraft date to 1944 with the formation of Aero Commander, a company that enlisted Ted Smith, founder of what would become AeroStar Aviation Corporation, to help design the first Aero Commander model. After changing Aero Commander’s name to the Aero Design and Engineering Company in 1950, the company’s first production model debuted in 1951. Eventually, the company was acquired by Rockwell-Standard, which would later merge with North American Aviation to form North American Rockwell and then later become Rockwell International in 1973 following another merger.

In 1981, Rockwell International sold the design rights to the Aero Commander line to Gulfstream, which sold the rights in the late 1980s to Commander Aircraft. That company would enter liquidation in the early 2000s, after which a group of Commander aircraft owners acquired the rights and formed the Commander Premier Aircraft Corporation (CPAC), a company that was sold and later folded.

    Pre-owned Commander models that are still available include variants of the Commander 112, 114, 500, and 690; 114A; Grand Renaissance; 680GLP; 680V; 980; 900; and 840.
