FedEx Express has ordered 12 Boeing 767 Freighter and 12 Boeing 777 Freighter aircraft in what the company’s CEO says is another positive step in its fleet modernization program. The order is valued at roughly $6.6 billion and brings the number of wide-body freighters Boeing has sold this year to more than 50.

    Taking Orders

The order strengthens a relationship between the companies that already found FedEx as a Boeing Global Services customer, a primary operator of Boeing 757 Freighters, and the largest operator of 767 and 777 Freighters. “This repeat order is a big vote of confidence in Boeing's market-leading freighter family and the long-term outlook for air freight," says Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO.

Providing international range capacity, the 767 Freighter is based on the 767-300ER (extended range) passenger jet and serves long-haul, regional, and feeder markets. The aircraft can haul roughly 58 tons (52.6 tonnes) of cargo. The 777 Freighter is billed as the “world's longest-range twin-engine freighter” with its 4,900-nautical mile (9,075-kilometer) range and 112-ton (102-tonne) payload capacity. The 777 Freighter enables FedEx to connect Asia with its hub in Memphis, Tennessee, non-stop and reduce transit times by up to three hours.

    Reliable & Efficient

David Cunningham, FedEx Express CEO and president, says the 767 and 777 Freighters have enhanced the company’s air operations’ efficiency and reliability. The 777’s range “has allowed us to provide faster transit times around the globe,” he says.

Boeing notes that demand for global airfreight grew by nearly 10% in 2017, and the sector is projected to increase an additional 4% to 5% this year. “Air cargo carriers are adding capacity to keep up with demand, either by converting passenger airplanes into freighters or ordering new production cargo jets,” Boeing says.
