Lancair International Announces Door Upgrade For 4-Place Kit Models, Including New Mako Models

At the recent 2018 EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Lancair International announced a new XL baggage door option for all its non-pressurized four-place models. Models include the new single-engine Mako, which Lancair debuted at last year’s AirVenture show, and previous models such as the ES and IV. Based in Uvalde, Texas, where the company manufactures aviation composite aircraft kits, Lancair says the XL door is 40 percent larger than its original door design. It is available for all new Mako models and as a retrofit for installation at the company’s facility.

    Opening Up

The XL option increases door area from 375 square inches to more than 530 square inches, opening the baggage compartment up to such larger items as golf bags and oversized suitcases. Lancair says the new door also sports heavier-duty hinges that the company relocate to the door’s leading edge from a previous top-hinged arrangement.

In addition to lessening the changes of a passenger bumping his head while loading cargo, the door relocation improves safety in “the unlikely event of an in-flight release,” Lancair states. Lancair also says it built the hatch and opening to tighter tolerances resulting in an improved fit and finish and less wind-related noise.

    Mako & More

Located at the Garner Field Airport, Lancair says its aircraft is in operation in 34 countries on five continents. The company has sold 2,200-plus of its kits globally and more than 1,000 owners have logged tens of thousands of miles. Besides piston and turbine kits for the Mako, which falls in the experimental aircraft category, Lancair recently announced a new two-seat “little brother” to the Mako dubbed the Barracuda that sells for $200,000. The company also offers a Builder’s Assist Program.
