United Airlines Orders Nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Aircraft
In a deal valued at $2.53 billion, United Airlines has agreed to buy nine 787-9 twin-aisle commercial jets from Boeing’s “super-efficient” 787 Dreamliner lineup. United Airlines previously inked a $1.1 billion deal in July with Boeing to purchase four 787-9 aircraft, which offers 290 seats in a standard configuration and the longest range of the Dreamliner lineup. That lineup also includes the 787-8 and 787-10, the newest and longest member.
Taking Orders
In a statement, Boeing says United’s most recent order “reflects its fleet strategy of replacing older wide-body jets with new, advanced airplanes,” including the 787-9, “which can fly farther and use 20 percent less fuel with 20 percent fewer emissions.” United has ordered 64 Dreamliners to date, while net orders of 787 Dreamliners now exceed 100 for 2018 and nearly 1,400 overall. Boeing claims 787 Dreamliner aircraft have transported about 280 million passengers since entering service in 2011.
Boeing notably says nearly half of 787 Dreamliner customers have made additional orders, a fact that’s “helping to make it the fastest-selling wide-body jet in history.” Ihssane Mounir, Boeing’s senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing, attributed the line’s marketplace success to “great partners” that have “taken the airplane's unrivaled performance to open new routes and offer passengers a wonderful travel experience.”
“Premium Transcontinental Routes”
The Dreamliner 787-9’s flight range is 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 kilometers). That compares to the 242-seat 787-8’s top 7,355-nautical mile (13,620-kilometer) range and the 330-seat 787-10’s 6,430-nautical mile (11,910-kilometer) range. Measuring 206 feet long (63 meters), the 787-9 is about 18 feet shorter than the 787-10.
Boeing says that since United began using the Dreamliner in 2012, it has used 787-8s and 787-9s to serve such intercontinental routes as Houston to Sydney and San Francisco to Singapore. United is serving as the 787-10’s North American launch partner, and says it will debut the first 787-10 “on premium transcontinental routes” in the United States. That will boost “its coast-to-coast schedules to offer passengers travelling between New York/Newark and Los Angeles and San Francisco more flights and more premium seats.”
Besides Dreamliner aircraft, Boeing manufacturers 737 MAX commercial aircraft (MAX 7, 8, 9, and 10) and Boeing Business Jets. Controller.com has numerous used Boeing aircraft for sale, including 737s, 777s, 757s, 747s, 727s, and Boeing Business Jet aircraft.
