Oklahoma State University recently announced it will add Cirrus Aircraft’s SR20 piston trainer to its existing Aviation Program fleet. The move entails the delivery of five new SR20s beginning in fall 2019 and marks the first partnership between OSU and Cirrus Aircraft, the Duluth, Minnesota-based manufacturer of the single-engine SR Series of S20, SR22, and turbocharged SR22T models. Cirrus also recently launched the G2, the next generation of its Vision Jet, which is billed as the “world’s first single-engine Personal Jet.”

The Cirrus SR20 piston aircraft that Oklahoma State University will add to its Aviation Program this fall uses a 215-horsepower Lycoming IO-390-C3B6 engine, seats up to five, integrates the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, and features the Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck from Garmin. Safe Training

Describing it as the “plane that put Cirrus on the map and transformed an industry,” the SR20 can serve as trainer but is also “perfectly suitable for business use,” Cirrus states. Using a 215-horsepower Lycoming IO-390-C3B6 engine, the aircraft offers a maximum cruise speed of 155 KTAS and 17,500-foot (5.3-kilometer) maximum operating altitude.

Cirrus claims the SR Series is “one of the safest and most versatile training airplanes available today,” including due to its all-composite structure and inclusion of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System. SR Series aircraft also include the Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck from Garmin featuring two flight displays, a Flight Management System keypad controller, an Electronic Stability and Protection system, and engine-indication and crew-related alerting and warning systems.

    High-Quality Learning

Lance Fortney, OSU Flight Center program manager, says the university is excited to partner with Cirrus and stresses the importance of having new airplanes for training. “As our program continues to grow, it’s important for us to upgrade our fleet and equipment so that we can continue to deliver the highest quality learning experience for our students,” he says. “Having brand new airplanes that are considered the safest training aircraft on the market is a key selling point for our program and will help us attract the best and the brightest to OSU.”
