Air Greenland Orders Two Airbus H225 Helicopters For Search & Rescue Missions
In an effort to win a contract to provide its country with SAR (search and rescue) service, Air Greenland has ordered two Airbus H225 heavy helicopters repurposed from the oil and gas industry. Set for delivery in coming months, the helicopters will replace the Sikorsky S-61N model that Air Greenland currently uses for SAR purposes. Founded in 1960 as Grønlandsfly, Air Greenland is Greenland’s principal airline, offering commercial jet, seaplane, helicopter, and fixed-winged services.
Tried & Tested
Airbus describes the H225 as an all-weather, long-range solution suitable for SAR applications but also long-distance offshore crew changes, aerial work, firefighting, passenger transport, law enforcement, utility missions, and other applications. The H225 and the related H225M military model are in use by 20-plus countries, Airbus says. The H225 is a member of Airbus’ Super Puma lineup, and is Airbus Helicopters’ largest model. While the H225 has logged 600,000-plus flight hours, the Super Puma family overall has recorded more than 5.5 million flight hours.
The H225 falls into the 11-ton category, supports up to 19 passengers, and can be configured with six stretchers. The helicopter uses two Safran Helicopter Makila 2A1 engines and includes a four-axis autopilot system. The H225’s maximum range is 707.3 nautical miles (1,309 kilometers) with standard fuel tanks at capacity, and it has a maximum takeoff weight with external load of 24,691.8 pounds (11,200 kilograms).
Well-Supported
Airbus will provide Air Greenland with a comprehensive maintenance and support package, as well as pilot and crew training. “These two specific aircraft have low numbers of flight hours, and their remarkable capability on SAR operations ensures that they will be able to provide a highly effective service in that role for many years to come,” says Jacob Nitter Sørensen, Air Greenland CEO.
