Diamond Aircraft detailed a new concept variant of its DA62 MPP aircraft for the survey industry at the recent INTERGEO Expo and Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, which took place from October 13 to 15. The Austrian manufacturer expects its design team will complete “single-seat concept” and “survey hatch” design phases certified as Major Change STC by mid-2020.

Markus Fischer, Diamond Aircraft director of special mission aircraft, says the new program represents one of the biggest product enhancements in the special mission aircraft segment in years. Feedback at INTERGEO, he says, indicates “the survey industry is looking for the next generation aircraft, able to operate on low cost and a high environmental standard.”

    Configuration Details

Diamond’s new program involves three major pieces. The first is Diamond replacing the standard bench seat in the DA62 with two individual, adjustable pilot seats repositioned 2.75 inches (70 millimeters) back to “significantly increase” operator room. A center console for standard DZUS units or custom applications will also be included. The second piece will see Diamond replacing the right-hand cabin operator seat with integrated survey cameras and a stabilization mount. Finally, Diamond will work with its partners Vexcel Imaging and RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems to transfer Diamond’s DA42 MPP GeoSTAR concept to the DA62 MPP’s survey configuration.

Diamond Aircraft recently introduced a new variant and concept for its DA62 aircraft for the survey industry. Among other things, the new program will find Diamond’s design team replacing the aircraft’s standard bench seat with two individual pilot seats, as well as replacing the right-hand cabin operator seat with integrated survey cameras and a stabilization mount. Diamond says a typical future survey multi-mission solution will feature a Vexcel UltraCAM Eagle or Osprey system, as well as a SOMAG GSM4000 stabilization mount installed in the cabin in combination with a RIEGL VQ-780 II airborne scanner. Andrew Peczinka, Diamond special mission aircraft design engineer, says the DA62 MPP’s single-seat operator configuration “is a huge step forward in integrating larger, more capable sensors for our customers.” He adds that the modification will enable providing a larger selection of sensor applications “once limited to only larger aircraft platforms.”
