Gulfstream Aerospace’s Savannah, Georgia, Fleet Passes 1 Million Nautical Miles Using SAF

Business jet manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace announced in late December that its fleet based at its company headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, recently surpassed 1 million nautical miles (1.85 million kilometers) using SAF (sustainable aviation fuel). “We take our role as an industry leader in environmental sustainability very seriously, so this is a milestone we’re extremely proud of,” stated Mark Burns, Gulfstream president.

    Goal Oriented

Gulfstream says it has logged 550-plus flights using SAF, a blend consisting of 30% low-carbon, drop-in fuel “derived from agricultural waste” and 70% traditional Jet A fuel. Since March 2016 when it began using SAF with its corporate, demonstration, and customer support and flight tests, Gulfstream has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 1,433 tons (1,300 metric tons), it says. With every gallon of SAF its Savannah-based fleet uses, Gulfstream says it saves at least 60% in carbon emissions on a lifecycle basis compared to petroleum-based jet fuel.

Gulfstream also makes SAF available to customers at its facilities in Long Beach and Van Nuys, California. The Long Beach facility uses SAF for all completions and delivery flights. Additionally, Gulfstream notes that its sustainability strategy helps aid overall business aviation industry goals that the NBAA (National Business Aviation Association, GAMA (General Aviation Manufacturers Association), and IBAC (International Business Aviation Council) have established. Those goals call for a 50% cut in carbon emissions by 2050 relative to 2005 levels, a 2% gain in fuel efficiency annually from 2010 to 2020, and carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onward, according to Gulfstream.

    A History Of Sustainability

In August, the Business Intelligence Group awarded Gulfstream a 2019 Sustainability Leadership Award for its efforts involving SAF, which date to 2011 when a Gulfstream G450 became the first business jet to cross the Atlantic Ocean using SAF. In 2015, Gulfstream entered an agreement for World Fuel Services to supply it SAF in Savannah. World Fuel Services now manages distribution and other logistics for Gulfstream’s SAF usage on both coasts. World Energy produces Gulfstream’s SAF supply at a California refinery. “Both companies are valued partners and play ‎an important role in helping our industry achieve its carbon-reduction goals,” Burns says.
