Boeing Presents Royal Australian Air Force With First Loyal Wingman Unmanned Aircraft Prototype
The Boeing-led Loyal Wingman Advanced Development program in Australia recently presented Australia’s Royal Australian Air Force with the first of three prototypes of the unmanned Loyal Wingman aircraft. The artificial intelligence-equipped aircraft serves as the foundation of the Boeing Airpower Teaming System (ATS) being developed for the worldwide defense market.
“Disruptive Advantage”
The prototype aircraft now begins ground testing and taxi procedures before making its maiden flight sometime this year. The aircraft is the first designed, engineered, and made in Australia in 50-plus years, and represents Boeing’s largest investment in unmanned aircraft outside of the United States. The ATS will provide “disruptive advantage” to allied forces’ manned and unmanned missions by providing fighter-like performance and utilizing technology that supports intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and tactical early-warning missions, as well as by using AI as a force multiplier to fly independently or support manned aircraft.
Hon. Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia, says the aircraft will be key to exploring the Australian Air Force’s critical abilities to protect the country and its allies. Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, Royal Australian Air Force chief, says the project demonstrates the importance of the Air Force’s relationship with Boeing Australia and the defense industry at large. Assisting in prototype work are 35-plus members in four Australian states.
