Boeing Commits To 100% Sustainable Fuels By 2030

    Posted On: January 26, 2021

Boeing recently announced an ambitious goal of using 100% sustainable fuels to fly its commercial aircraft by 2030. The company has already conducted successful test flights in which petroleum jet fuel was replaced with sustainable fuels to address climate change. These sustainable fuels are believed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s lifecycle with the potential to reach 100% according to studies cited by the Air Transport Action Group. Currently these fuels are used in a 50/50 blend with conventional jet fuel, which is the maximum allowed under current specifications, but to meet the industry’s commitment for emission reductions of 50% of 2005 levels by 2050, the aircraft will need to fly on 100% sustainable fuels long before 2050. Boeing wants to work with regulatory authorities to raise the blending limit for expanded use.

    A Special Blend

Sustainable aviation fuels are made from non-edible plants, agricultural and forestry waste, non-recyclable household waste, industrial plant off-gassing, and a variety of other feedstocks, and are certified by third-party organizations. Boeing has worked globally with airlines, governments, industry, and research institutions to expand supply and reduce fuel costs. Boeing took part in biofuel test flights starting in 2008 and the Boeing ecoDemonstrator flight test program collaborated with FedEx Express to make the first commercial aircraft flight using 100% sustainable fuels in 2018 in a 777 Freighter.

"Our industry and customers are committed to addressing climate change, and sustainable aviation fuels are the safest and most measurable solution to reduce aviation carbon emissions in the coming decades," says Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stan Deal. "We're committed to working with regulators, engine companies, and other key stakeholders to ensure our airplanes and eventually our industry can fly entirely on sustainable jet fuels."
