Bombardier Continues Support For Student-Aimed Robotics Festival
For the seventh consecutive year, global plane and train manufacturer Bombardier made a significant presence at the Robotics Festival in Montreal where more than 3,000 students ages six to 18 attended the three-day event that First Robotics Quebec and Youth Fusion organized. One of First Robotics Quebec’s founders, Bombardier was the main sponsor of the festival, which aims to motivate students to pursue advanced studies and careers in the science, technology, and engineering fields.
“Impressive Roots”
Held at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard in Montréal March 1-3, the festival found teams from Quebec, Ontario, Brazil, France, and the United States working with mentors and professional engineers to design, build, and program a robot able to conduct complex tasks in a limited amount of time. Winning teams earned the right to advance to a World Championship competition set for late April in Detroit, Michigan.
In a news release, Pierre Beaudoin, Bombardier chairman of the board, noted how inspiring it was to “see the ingenuity and the energy deployed by the participants to build these impressive robots.” The festival marked a “great opportunity to encourage the next generation of innovators to persevere in their studies,” he said. “Bombardier is very proud to help them develop the skills that will give them access to thrilling careers in science, technology, and engineering in a few years.”
Mentoring Young Minds
Bombardier had more than 100 employees on hand to volunteer at this year’s festival, including many who have volunteered at the event for years. Other employees, Bombardier stated, functioned as mentors during the competition’s preparation phase and were hand to support their teams during competition.
The festival’s competition entailed specific challenges aimed at students six to 10 years old, nine to 14, and 14 to 18. In the nine-14 age group, for example, teams explored humans’ relationship with water and the uses of water in order to design and program an autonomous robot using LEGO Mindstorm technology. The teams then competed with their robots in tournament competitions.
Elsewhere, Bombardier had a stand onsite where visitors could learn more about the company’s C Series commercial aviation aircraft, including its cockpit and rear fuselage, as well as what steps are required to create an aircraft from the “dream to reality” phases.
Based in Montreal, Bombardier operates production and engineering sites in 28 countries across Transportation, Business Aircraft, Commercial Aircraft, and Aerostructures and Engineering Services segments. Bombardier’s business aircraft for sale includes Challenger, Learjet, and Global aircraft, which Controller.com has numerous pre-owned models of for sale.
