    About The Bombardier Global Express

Introduced in October 1991 at the annual National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) convention, the Bombardier Global Express initiated a new effort from Bombardier to manufacture ultra-long-range, large-cabin jet aircraft for executive and luxury travel. Upon its introduction, Bombardier claimed the Global Express had the largest cabin of any business jet and could fly nonstop from New York to Tokyo, Paris to Singapore, or Los Angles to Sydney.

    Bombardier Global Express

Drawing design inspiration from Bombardier’s Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) and Challenger 600 models, the Global Express greeted the business jet aviation sector complete with an advanced wing design and winglets, twin Rolls-Royce BR710-AR-20 engines with FADEC (full authority digital engine control), and a Honeywell Primus XP electronic flight information system (EFIS) avionics suite. The Global Express remained in production until 2005, and about 150 remain in operation.

    Bombardier Enters Aerospace

Bombardier’s entry into the aerospace sector occurred in 1986 when it acquired Canadair, which manufactured Challenger business jets. Bombardier expanded its aerospace offerings in 1990 with its purchase of the Learjet luxury business jet lineup. In 1992, it further expanded its operations with the acquisition of De Havilland in a deal that included that aircraft manufacturer’s aircraft assembly and manufacturing facility in Toronto. Although based in Montreal, Bombardier continues to manufacture the Global 7500 at the Toronto facility.

    Model History

Bombardier launched the Global Express flight program in December 1993, and began manufacturing the first prototype in October 1995 in Toronto. The aircraft’s first flight took place in October 1996, lasting nearly 3 hours. The aircraft received its type certification both in Canada and the United States in 1998. Bombardier entered the aircraft into service in July 1999. The company eventually upgraded the Global Express to the longer-range Global Express XRS, which it announced in 2002 and produced from 2005 to 2012.

In 2011, Bombardier rebranded the Global Express XRS as the Global 6000, which it produced from 2012 to 2019 before updating it to the Global 6500. Able to seat up to 17 passengers, the Global 6000 has a 6,000-nautical-mile (11,112-kilometer) flight range with up to eight passengers at a typical cruise speed of Mach 0.85, while the Global 6500 has a 6,600-nm (12,223-km) range. In addition to the Global 6500, Bombardier’s business jet lineup includes the Learjet 75 Liberty; the Challenger 350, 650, and 3500; and the Global 5500, 7500, and 8000.

    The Global Express Up Close

The Global Express is typically configured for 13 seats but can seat up to 19 passengers. The jet aircraft’s two Rolls Royce BR710-A2-20 engines can each generate 14,750 pounds-force of maximum thrust. It has a 6,000-nm flight range, a max altitude of 51,000 feet (15,545 meters), a 5,820-ft (1,774-m) takeoff distance, and a 2,190-ft (667.5-m) landing distance. Bombardier designed the Global Express with a wingspan of 94 ft (28.7-m), an overall length of 99.3 ft (30.3 m), and a cabin that measures 6.3 ft high by 8.2 ft wide by 48.4 ft long (1.9 x 2.5 x 14.8 m).
