Boeing & Hawaiian Airlines Agree On Dreamliner 787-9 Jets Order
In a deal valued at $2.82 billion, Hawaiian Airlines has announced its intention to purchase 10 787-9 jets from Boeing’s Dreamliner lineup to complete medium- and long-haul flights. Previously, the Honolulu-based airline had committed to buy six Airbus A330neo aircraft but canceled that order reportedly due to financing issues related to the aircraft. Hawaiian Airlines then selected Boeing’s Dreamliner over Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. Boeing and Hawaiian Airlines are now working to finalize this most recent order.
Dreamliner Benefits
Carrying upward of 290 passengers on flights up to 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 kilometers), the twin-aisle 787-9 uses 20% less fuel and emits 20% fewer emissions than aircraft it replaces, Boeing claims. Entering service in 2011, the 787 is flying 1,500-plus routes and has helped open 170 additional nonstop routes globally, Boeing adds.
Hawaiian Airlines, which connects the Hawaiian Islands to North America and Asia locations, will be able to use the fuel efficiency- and range-related gains the 787 enables to enhance its current services and open new routes profitably, Boeing says. In a statement, Peter Ingram, Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO, said in terms of modernizing its fleet in 2021 and beyond, the Dreamliner’s operational efficiency and “superior guest experience” made it the best choice for the airline.
Boeing Global Services
Beyond fuel efficiency- and route-related benefits, Boeing says Hawaiian Airlines will also benefit from its Boeing Global Services program, including through numerous new aircraft transition support services the program contains. Those services include training and initial provisioning services aimed at ensuring a “successful and on-time entry into service.”
As a stretch of the 787-8 that seats up to 242 passengers, the 787-9 measures 206 feet (63 meters) long compared to the 787-8’s 186 feet (7 meters). Using GEnx-1B/Trent 1000 engines, the 787-9 has a 197.4-foot (60.17-meter) wingspan and measures 55.10 feet (17 meters) high.
In addition to the Dreamliner family, Boeing also produces the 737 MAX family (MAX 7, 8, 9, and 10), Boeing Business Jets, and other commercial aircraft.
