Boeing Outlines Progress In Cutting Greenhouse Gas Emissions & More In 2019 Global Environment Report
In a 2019 Global Environment Report that Boeing released in early June, the aerospace company detailed progress it has made as part of a Global 2025 Environment Strategy launched in 2018 to build “cleaner, more fuel-efficient airplanes” and find “innovative ways to recycle and conserve resources” through 2025. Highlights include a claim that Boeing surpassed targets it set for 2018 by (for example) reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 7.3% at it worksites around the world.
A Clean Commitment
Boeing’s Global 2025 Environment Strategy contains various “ambitious” goals concerning products developed for environmental performance, as well as to reduce emission, waste, and water and energy usage at its worksites. Boeing’s goals also include an aim to work with communities around the world. Bryan Scott, Boeing vice president of environment, health, and safety, says the company is “committed to cleaner water, air, and land.”
Besides the 7.3% reduction in worksite-related greenhouse gas emissions, Boeing reports it has prevented 2 million pounds (907,184.74 kilograms) of excess carbon fiber per year from exiting company factories and entering landfills. That achievement has occurred in part via a partnership with the UK-based ELG Carbon Fibre. Boeing aims to reduce solid waste to landfills by 20% by 2025.
Other Report Highlights
Boeing reports that through the use of renewable energy to power its primary data center, it’s saving enough electricity each year to power 4,000-plus homes. In addition, Boeing worked with Etihad Airways last year to fly a Boeing 787 Dreamliner partially powered by biofuel that stemmed from desert plants irrigated with seawater. Boeing announced in March it will offer customers an option to use biofuel on delivery flights from Boeing delivery centers in Renton and Everett, Washington. Elsewhere, Boeing says it’s working to design new energy-efficient facilities worldwide, including the 737 Completion and Delivery Center in China and a UK-based fabrication facility.
