Turkish Airlines Expands Cargo Fleet With Boeing 777 Freighter Aircraft Order
Days after Turkish Airlines posted record profits in late November for 2018’s first nine months based on strong passenger and cargo demand, the airline and Boeing announced that Turkish Airlines placed an order for three Boeing 777 Freighter aircraft. Based on Boeing’s 777-200LR (Longer Range) model, the 777 Freighter offers a 4,900-nautical mile (9,075-kilometer) range with a full 112-ton (102,000-kilogram) payload.
Revenue & Tonnage Growth
The Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines reports that it hauled about 70 million passengers in 2017. As Turkey’s national flag carrier, the airline provides direct flights to 304 destinations in 122 countries. The airline’s Turkish Cargo sub-brand, meanwhile, serves customers in 124 countries and is billed as “the world's fastest-growing air cargo carrier” in terms of cargo volume, new flight destinations, and expanding cargo fleet. Through 2018’s first three quarters, Boeing says Turkish Airlines’ freight business experienced a 29 percent revenue increase and 25 percent tonnage increase versus the same period in 2017. The airline has 30-plus 777s in its fleet, making it among the top 10 operators of the wide-body jet in Europe and the Middle East, Boeing says.
Turkish Airlines previously ordered three 777 Freighters in January 2017 and finalized an order for 25 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with five more options earlier this year. More recently, the airline took delivery of new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Overall, Boeing says the airline’s fleet includes 160-plus Boeing jetliners with about 100 more on order. Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, says innovations the airline introduced have fueled growth of Turkey’s commercial aviation sector and have “anchored a new state-of-the-art airport.”
Ties To Turkey
To support Turkey’s growing aerospace sector and strengthen its own presence in the country, Boeing recently launched a National Aerospace Initiative with Turkey that’s concentrated on industrial development, technology acceleration, services collaboration, and advanced-skill training. Boeing also plans to open an engineering center in Istanbul and has already expanded a collaboration with Turkish Airlines’ Turkish Technic maintenance arm that made Turkish Technic a strategic supplier for Boeing's Global Fleet Care program.
